Massachusetts State Trooper Hurt After Crashing Cruiser While Trying to Avoid Deer

A Massachusetts State Trooper remains hospitalized after authorities say he crashed his cruiser early Friday morning while trying to avoid a deer on Interstate 91 in Hatfield.

Authorities said the 28-year-old trooper, whose name is not being released at this time, was responding to a call for a disabled motor vehicle at 1:30 a.m. when the deer ran in front of his cruiser in the area of the Chestnut Street overpass.

While attempting to avoid the animal, the trooper swerved and went over a guardrail.

Another trooper happened to be driving by and pulled the injured trooper from his cruiser, which had become engulfed in flames.

The trooper was taken to Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton. He was later transferred to Bay State Medical Center in Springfield for further evaluation. His exact condition has not been released.

Authorities evidence at the scene showed that the deer may have suffered a glancing strike but it was able to run away.

No further information was available.
