An MBTA employee originally arrested back in June for stealing $80,000 has now been indicted for stealing more than $450,000 from fare collection boxes he was responsible for repairing.
Stephen P. Fagerberg, 55, of Dedham, was arrested back in June as a result of a joint operation by Massachusetts State Police, the attorney general's office and Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Police.
He was indicted Thursday on two counts of larceny over $1,200 in a continuous scheme. He will be arraigned in Suffolk Superior Court on Oct. 11.
As an automated fare technician at the MBTA, the attorney general's office said Fagerberg was responsible for repairing fare collection boxes on MBTA buses in South Boston.
He is currently suspended without pay from his position at the MBTA.
The attorney general's office began investigating Fagerberg in April of 2018. Police conducted an undercover operation that involved planting unmarked bills in fare collection boxes that Fagerberg serviced. Authorities said he deposited the marked bills into his personal bank account via a drive-up ATM.
In a statement in June, the T called the alleged thefts "a reprehensible violation of the public’s trust, and a stain on the good work performed by thousands of MBTA employees every day" and said it had launched an internal review into all revenue collection procedures.

Court documents reveal that Fagerberg admitted to stealing some of the money when he was questioned by police, but he pleaded not guilty at his arraignment and was released on personal recognizance bail.
Fagerberg has not returned calls seeking comment. It is not known if he has an attorney.
