Did a Meteor Streak Across the New England Sky?

People across the northeast reported seeing a bright flash in the night sky around 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Within New England, it was spotted as far south as Connecticut, where there were sightings in Groton and Bloomfield. It was seen from Ayer and Milford in central Massachusetts, as well as the Boston area. There were also reported sightings in Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

It was spotted as far north as Montreal, according to reports on social media.

While it's unclear what the object was, it may have been a meteor or a fireball.

A meteoroid is a piece of debris that enters Earth's atmosphere, burning up as it does so. The meteor is the bright flash that results from that process.

A fireball is essentially a brighter version of the meteor.
