Maine Fire Captain Dies in Motorcycle Crash on I-495 in Chelmsford, Mass.

A Maine fire captain has died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash with a car on Interstate 495 Monday afternoon in Chelmsford, Massachusetts.

State police said David Mains, 48, of Raymond, Maine, was driving a Yamaha XVS in the left lane of I-495 northbound when he somehow struck the rear of a Mercedes-Benz C450 at about 3:30 p.m.

Mains was taken by medical helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

His passenger, a 48-year-old Raymond, Maine woman, was taken by ambulance to Lowell General Hospital with serious injuries then to Tufts Medical Center.

The driver of the Mercedes, a 56-year-old Andover woman, and her juvenile passenger were not hurt.

According to the Raymond, Maine Fire Department's Facebook page, Mains was their Captain. In a post on Monday morning, the department expressed their sorrow.

"It is with the deepest sorrow we notify our members and community of a terrible loss in our family," read part of the post. "Captain Mains was a dedicated member who loved his family, community, and this department. He will be sorely missed and will leave a large void in our family and organization which will not be filled without unmatched extraordinary efforts, pride, and dedication which Captain Mains put forth every day. Captain Mains has been honored as firefighter of the year, awarded many community service awards, and honored with the Chiefs award."

Police said the crash, which happened just north of Route 3, happened after the Mercedes slowed due to traffic congestion. Due to the crash, two northbound lanes were closed for an hour and a half.

The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation by Massachusetts State Police.
