New Hampshire Sheriff Charged With Drunken Driving

Merrimack County Sheriff Scott Hilliard, 58, of Northfield, was arrested, released on bail

A New Hampshire sheriff is facing drunken driving charges.

Merrimack County Sheriff Scott Hilliard, 58, of Northfield, was arrested Friday for aggravated driving while intoxicated.

Police say they received a report Friday for a vehicle operating erratically on Laconia Road in Tilton, and the caller followed Hilliard's vehicle into a 99 Restaurant parking lot where officers arrested him.

Hilliard's attorney, Jared Bedrick, said in a statement that the sheriff cooperated with local law enforcement officers. The statement said "critical evidence remains unanalyzed'' and that there will be no further comment until the allegations have been reviewed.

Hilliard, who was not on duty, was released on bail and will appear in court on August 26 for his arraignment. Neither he nor his attorney responded to messages Sunday morning.
