Nubian Square Coalition Speaks to Group in Roxbury

The group is pushing to change the name of Boston's Dudley Square

The Nubian Square Coalition spoke to a group in Roxbury about the potential name change to Dudley Square on Friday.

Dudley Square is named for Thomas Dudley, a former governor of Massachusetts who signed pieces of legislation that allowed for slave trade and promoted slavery.

Nubian Square is named for the ancient Nubian Empire, which sat in what is now Sudan, in Africa.

"Our hope is that with the momentum that's going on," said Sadiki Kambon, a chairman on the coalition. "Young folks are really going to pick up the ball...and say we're going take down a lot of those names that are offensive to our community."

Voters will take to the polls on November 5.
