A Maine man who shot a Connecticut State Police trooper in a hunting accident in Texas is unlikely to be charged, authorities said Wednesday.
Trooper 1st Class Stephen Davis, of Hebron, Connecticut, died Saturday on the Cinco Ranch in Maverick County. He was a 27-year veteran of the state police.
Authorities said 74-year-old Alvin Chase Sr. fired the bullet that struck the 50-year-old Davis. The Warren man told authorities he was trying to shoot a wild hog.
The Portland Press Herald reports Maverick County Sheriff's Investigator Robert Sifuentes said he and the medical examiner's office agreed the shooting was an accident.
Sifuentes said it's unlikely Chase will face charges in the case.
Chase declined to comment on the shooting.
