Hockey Players Allegedly Spit on Opponent, Call Him Racial Slur

The Massachusetts hockey community is reacting after high school athletes were accused of spitting on an opponent and calling him a racial slurs during a game.

Video purportedly shows a varsity boys' hockey player at the Old Rochester Regional High School spitting on a player from Wareham. During that same game, another Old Rochester player allegedly used a racial slur against the same Wareham player.

The Wareham player who was targeted thanked his team on social media, during a time when he said "adversity came to an all time high." The player also said he's "proud to wear the same jersey" as his teammates.

"It's too bad something like this would have happened. Everyone should be able to play the sport and have fun, and no one should be treated any differently," said hockey mom Nancy Gould.

The Wareham hockey team and parents had no comment at their practice in Bourne Wednesday.

The Wareham player's father, Quirino DoCanto, works for Wareham High School. He also had no comment, but said on Facebook that it was "a couple terrible decisions made by two individuals." He also said that he's "proud of our team and the program we run."

The superintendent said Old Rochester School District is "investigating" and the allegation is "deeply disturbing and is wholly inconsistent with the high standards of behavior demanded of our student-athletes."
