DA: Fatal Malden Shooting Was Result of Drug Transaction

A 23-year-old man was shot and killed Saturday evening in the area of Eastern Ave. and Bryant St.

Police are investigating a fatal shooting in Malden, Massachusetts.

Authorities received a call around 6:18 p.m. Saturday for a report of a shooting in the area of Eastern Avenue and Bryant Street.

The victim is Jeury Batista, 23, of Salem, Massachusetts, according to the Middlesex District Attorney's Office.

Batista was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. He was later pronounced dead. 

The chief medical examiner will determine a cause and manner of death.

The preliminary investigation suggests that the shooting occurred as part of a suspected drug transaction and is not believed to be a random incident of violence.

No one has been charged in connection to the incident but authorities are pursuing leads in order to determine the whereabouts of anyone connected to this crime. 

This shooting is actively being investigated by the Middlesex District Attorney's Office, the Malden Police Department, and Massachusetts State Police.
