Patriots tight end Lance Kendricks has been suspended for the first game of the 2019 regular season, the NFL announced Saturday.
The league says the nine-year veteran violated the NFL's policy and program on substances of abuse.
Kendricks may still practice for the remainder of the preseason and is eligible to play in the team's final preseason game against the Giants on Thursday. He is eligible to return to the Patriots' active roster on Monday, Sept. 9 following the team's first game.

This announcement comes just days after court documents revealed teammate Patrick Chung had been indicted for possession of cocaine in New Hampshire. Fellow Patriots tight end Benjamin Watson, who retired at the end of last season, will also serve a four-game suspension for taking a banned substance before he signed with the Patriots.
The Patriots signed Kendricks to a one-year deal in July. He previously played for both the Rams and the Packers.
