An "armed and dangerous" suspect who allegedly stole and ditched a Maine police cruiser while handcuffed was seriously injured when he crashed another vehicle during a high-speed chase with authorities.

State police confirm the chase involving 22-year-old Tyler Tibbetts ended on Route 15 in Corinth Friday afternoon, when the vehicle he was driving crashed into trees.

Tibbetts was seriously injured after being pinned inside the wreck as a result of the crash, and a medical helicopter took him to Eastern Maine Medical Center for treatment.

It's still unclear to investigators how Tibbetts got another vehicle. He was alone at the time of the crash.

State police said a fully-marked Dexter police cruiser was stolen from Garland Road around 11:30 a.m. Friday. It was later found abandoned off of Parkman Road in Garland about 90 minutes later.

Tibbetts allegedly was in handcuffs at the time of the cruiser theft. Authorities warned nearby residents he was considered armed and dangerous.

No officers were injured in either the theft in Dexter or the high-speed crash in Corinth.

No other details were immediately available.
