Pedestrian Struck, Killed by Police Cruiser on Cape Cod

The crash happened by the corner of Cottage Lane and Rt-28 at about 2 a.m. in Barnstable

Barnstable Police say a pedestrian was struck and killed by a police cruiser early Sunday morning on Cape Cod.

The crash happened by the corner of Cottage Lane on Falmouth Road (Rt-28) at about 2 a.m. in Barnstable.

"I heard the sirens and then more sirens," said Georgi Schilling, who lives by the scene. "Then I heard a crash. Not really loud, but a crash. And then it was silent, and I thought that was weird."

The pedestrian, who has not been identified, was an adult male and pronounced dead at the scene. He was apparently walking in the center of the road - on the double yellow line - and was not in a crosswalk.

Preliminary reconstruction indicated that the Barnstable officer was responding to a call for service in a fully marked 2016 Ford Police Interceptor SUV with the cruiser's lights and siren activated when it struck the victim.

"I don't know why he would have been in the road. [A walking] path goes along Rt-28 for quite a distance," said Barnstable resident Cindy Silbor.

Orange spray paint now outlines the place on the road where the cruiser stopped post-collision.

The officer was transported to Cape Cod Hospital for non-life threatening injuries and is now home.

The crash in under investigation by Barnstable Police and Massachusetts State Police.
