The victim was identified as Alicia Heywood, 42, of South Easton

A woman has died after being shot in broad daylight in a busy section of Boston's Roslindale neighborhood.

The shooting took place shortly after 1:15 p.m. on Birch Street, outside Sullivan's Pharmacy. Investigators with the Boston Police Department say they believe the shooter targeted the woman.

The victim was taken to an area hospital, where she later died, police said. She was identified Sunday as Alicia Heywood, 42, of South Easton.

"Everyone here, all the neighborhood people here, have been saying how shocking and awful this is, because this is a nice, peaceful, friendly, diverse — everyone gets along — kind of little neighborhood here," said Carla Odiago, who heard the gunshots. "It's just scary."

Police say they don't want to release much information because the investigation is just getting underway, but they say they're searching for a suspect.

"At this time, we do not believe this was a random incident, and it's currently being investigated by Boston Police detectives," said Deputy Superintendent Victor Evans.
