Barricaded Man in New Haven Surrenders; Woman Held Hostage Released: Police

A woman who was held hostage in an apartment near Dixwell Avenue in New Haven for hours was released on Thursday morning and charges are pending against the suspect, who surrendered, according to police.

Police said the incident started around 3:30 a.m. in the area of Dixwell Avenue and Henry Street, which is where the apartment is.

The woman, who police said was being held at gunpoint by a man inside the apartment, was released around 9 a.m.

A 45-year-old man remained barricaded inside the apartment and walked out, surrendering, at 11:45 am., police said. He has been identified as 45-year-old David George Williams.

No injuries are reported, but an ambulance transported Williams to a medical evaluation at the hospital.  

Police said he was transferred from the hospital is he's being held in lieu of $500,000.

He has been charged with home invasion, carrying a pistol without a permit, carrying a dangerous weapon, unlawful restraint first degree, threatening second degree and breach of peace second degree.

Police said Special Victims Unit detectives seized a handgun they believe the Williams used.

Police remain at the scene, but several streets in the area that were closed have reopened.
