A police dog that was stabbed in the head with a screwdriver by a crime suspect in Worcester is expected to recover, according to police.

Around 9:30 a.m., police responded to reports of a man near 60 Foster St.  who was threatening to stab bus drivers and set them on fire, Worcester police said.

Police say they found the man crouched behind shrubs. He refused to come out, threatening to harm police despite warnings from K9 Officer Dan Pennellatore that a dog would be deployed.

Officer Pennellatore's partner, K9 Beebs, was sent to help remove the suspect. The suspect then stabbed K9 Beebs multiple times in the head with a screwdriver before he was apprehended by police.

K9 Beebs, a 3-year-old Belgian Malinois, was rushed to a local animal hospital for treatment of a laceration to his mouth and several head wounds.

He has since been released from the hospital, and will continue to recover at home, Worcester police said.

Police have not released the identity of the suspect.
