Ashburnham Police Searching for Suspect Who Killed Woman’s Goat

Police are investigating after a small goat was found dead in Ashburnham, Massachusetts.

Pat Stewart, who says her goats are like her puppies, is reeling after the baby goat she raised was found killed Friday morning.

"I'm sad," Stewart said. "I had her in the house for two months."

Police say the goat had been missing before it was discovered approximately 100 yards from its pen. They believe the suspect cut a whole in the goat's fence, lured the goat out into the woods and attacked it.

Sgt. Wade Wright says the goat had a couple of puncture wounds and its throat was cut.

Stewart said the goat thought she was a person and would have walked right up to anyone who approached the fence.

Investigators are warning those who live in the areas around Ashby Road and Lake Winnekeag to be alert.

"Things were discovered on scene that we are sending to the State Police crime lab and they will be processed," Sgt. Wright said.

"I had heard that there was some other goat deaths in the area within the last couple of months, but we have never had anything like that in Ashburnham, and we've been doing this for 20 years," Stewart said.

As police continue to investigate, people who live in the community are wondering who is capable of committing such a crime.

"It was somebody who is not completely alright in the head," Stewart said. "Nobody else would have done it."
