UPDATE: Officer Shot in Braintree Motel Released from Hospital

Suspect found dead of self-inflicted gunshot wounds

Authorities said Officer Donald Delaney, 36 - the Braintree, Massachusetts police officer who was shot Friday night - has been released from the hospital, according to Braintree mayor Joseph Sullivan.

He is now resting at a relative's home and in recovery.

In a statement from the Braintree Police Department, Delaney said he would like to thank Boston Medical Center and law enforcement for his care, and many in his life and his community for their support.

The statement said Delaney still faces surgery in the near future and that he and his family request privacy for now.

Delaney was shot in the face when he and other Braintree Police responded to the Motel 6 at 125 Union St. around 9:30 p.m. to serve a warrant regarding a domestic case to 25-year-old Tizaya Jordan Robinson.

Norfolk District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey said when Robinson refused to open the door to police, they tried using a motel key. Robinson fired back through a closed door, striking Delaney.

Officers removed Delaney from the scene and rushed him to Massachusetts General Hospital where he underwent surgery.

"He's been with our department since 2010, he's been awarded two lifesaving awards with the department," said Braintree Police Lt. Michael Want.

Robinson remained barricaded inside the motel until almost 2 a.m. when police heard shots ring out.

Once police checked the room with a robotic camera, they were able to see that Robinson had died of self-inflicted gun shot wounds.

"One wound that appeared consisted with self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head area," said Sullivan.

Sullivan said the medical examiner's officer will complete an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

As the district attorney investigates, Braintree Mayor Joseph Sullivan says the motel where the incident took place has been a long-time issue.

"That’s where our focus is. That’s where are thoughts and prayers are and in the next coming days we will be addressing the issues with Motel 6," Sullivan said.
