Fatal Shooting Under Investigation in Roxbury

Boston police have confirmed that a man has died after a shooting overnight in the city's Roxbury neighborhood.

The shooting was reported around 11:20 p.m. Wednesday on Kensington Street, according to Boston EMS. No one was transported from the scene, they said.

Police announced in a press release Thursday morning that they found a man suffering from what appeared to be a gunshot wound when they arrived at the scene. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical technicians.

The victim was identified later Thursday as 22-year-old Idelfonso Velez of Boston.

The shooting took place by the intersection of Elmore Street near Malcolm X Park. Police had cleared the scene as of Thursday morning after spending hours collecting evidence.

There was a silver car parked nearby at one point with what appeared to be multiple bullet holes in it. That car has since been towed from the scene.

Some neighbors reported hearing at least two gunshots shortly before Valez was found dead.

Alex Kulakov, however, heard nothing and awoke to homicide detectives banging on his apartment door.

"About 1 a.m., the police came to my door and started banging on it, and when I opened it, they had just asked me if I had seen anything or heard anything,” Kulakov said.

Kulakov said when he looked out his window, he couldn’t believe the crime scene he saw just across the street.

“I saw some guy just laying on the street, they had like a tarp over him, which was pretty jarring, and I could see that it just happened,” he said. “They wheeled him off. They had the crime scene unit here and everything.”

No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.

“I just definitely hope they catch whoever did it and I’d like to say I’m very sorry to whoever it was and their family for having to go through this, because no one deserves to go through this," Kulakov said.
