After an hours-long standoff, a man who barricaded himself in a Massachusetts building has surrendered to police.
Authorities responded to the building on Franklin Street in Haverhill. The suspect may have been armed, police said.
State and Haverhill police negotiated with the suspect at the scene. State police confirmed around 6:30 p.m. that he had surrendered without incident.
The man was taken to an area hospital to be evaluated. He will then be booked by Haverhill Police.
The initial contact with the suspect was an attempt by Haverhill police to arrest a suspect on a warrant, with state police assistance. The suspect fled into the basement apartment of someone they know in a multi-family apartment building.
State police said initial reports indicated that the suspect shot at officers at some point during the initial altercation, but they have not been able to confirm that yet. Authorities said, "that will be subject to ongoing investigation and ballistics examination of scene."
There were no hostages, and as far as police know, the suspect was alone. No injuries were reported.
The Eagle-Tribune reported that Franklin Street was shut down, and that some nearby homes were being evacuated.
The city of Haverhill sent out a tweet saying that police have an "armed suspect cornered" in a home on Franklin Street and urged area residents to stay in their homes until further notice.
A shelter has been set up for evacuated residents and kids whose school buses were diverted and can't get home.
