Racist Graffiti Discovered on Fence in Fairhaven, Mass.

Police in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, are investigating after they racist graffiti was found on a fence outside a resident's home.

The racial slur was painted on the Castle Avenue resident's backyard fence, according to police.

One of the homeowners was walking her dog when she saw the racial slur.

"I was horrified," she said. "It is disgusting thing to write."

Police don't think the family was targeted.

The fence sits along a trail that's a popular cut-through, and the words that were sprayed on the fence are lyrics to a rap song. Though they initially said they were investigating as a hate crime, police later said it appears to be a random act of vandalism.

"This has got to stop," the woman said. "It's just not right. It's been very upsetting, to say the least."

The husband and wife do not want to be identified.

They couple has lived in the home for over 20 years and never had a problem until recently.

They're not sure if they are being targeted, but someone threw eggs at their home in December.

"I don't know why," said the wife. "I don't understand it, but yes, I am feeling attacked, I think anybody would."

Neighbors say the graffiti is disgraceful.

"The neighborhood is a very quiet neighborhood, but that doesn't mean things like that don't happen," said neighbor Leanne Dupras. "I think it's a sad commentary on what people are behaving like now."

"It's horrible," said neighbor Casey Baker. "It's ridiculous, there's kids that play in this neighborhood, and it's asinine, really."

The homeowners have one message for the person responsible for the words on their fence.

"Paint the fence," said the husband. "Take the words out of there. Whoever did it, come back here and clean it up."

Investigators are looking for leads in the case, especially if anyone saw anything suspicious in the immediate area over the weekend.
