Rain, Snow Arrive This Weekend

Mild south, wintry north

A split weekend is on tap for New England, with wintry weather in northern New England, and milder conditions in southern New England.

Early sunshine today will give way to clouds by afternoon as a disturbance works towards New England. As that happens, expect high temperatures in the 20s and 30s.

By evening a few snow showers will arrive in western New England, before spreading east. Those will mostly fall along and north of the Massachusetts Turnpike, with some minor accumulations on the order of a dusting-1 inch in those areas.

On Saturday, New England becomes bisected by a weather front. In northern New England, on the chillier side of the front, periodic snow will fall during the day. In southern New England, skies will be cloudy but it will be milder. Highs approach 50 around Boston, for example.

That front wobbles through the area again on Sunday, meaning it stays colder (20s and 30s) across the mountains and relatively milder (40s) in southern New England. At the same time, moisture will ride along the front right into our area. That means many of us will have periods of rain throughout the day. In northern New England snow and ice will fall.

When it’s all said and done, many in Northern New England will come away with 3-6 inches by the end of the weekend, with a few locally higher amounts. Good news for ski country, which already has a deep snow pack.

The front sinks out of the area on Monday, bringing back cooler air and clearing conditions.

We’ll turn unsettled again by the middle and end of next week with more disturbances riding towards us.
