Rain, Wet Snow Moves Into New England

We start the day cold and dry with temperatures in the 10s north and 20s south — with light variable wind.

A brief period of snow arrives first in Connecticut before noon, advancing to Worcester to Boston mid-day, then into northern New England after 2-3 p.m.

Snow may be briefly moderate, coating the grass and trees with a half inch or an inch, before letting up or changing to rain within 90 minutes.

In the northern mountains we have several hours of sunshine, then a relatively snowy afternoon and evening, with a few inches or more in some of the ski areas.

The temperature briefly jumps back to near 50 degrees where the precipitation shuts off in southern New England.

The wind also returns, with gusts from the south past 45 mph from Connecticut to Cape Cod late in the day.

Today's weather is the result of a warm front moving south to north.

Then tonight a cold front comes in from the west, with another rain or snow shower, or even a squall before drier and colder air returns for most of the weekend.

Tomorrow and Sunday look mostly fair and dry, with temperatures below freezing at night and in the 30s to 40s by day.

We are watching a storm that moves off the mid-Atlantic states, but most of that rain and snow looks like it should stay out over the ocean.

The dry weekend is not a lock yet, but we're closing in on it.

Slightly colder air comes in Sunday and Sunday night. Then after a quiet Monday the next weather system arrives Tuesday.

Snow and rain will advance throughout most of New England Tuesday, changing to rain at the coast, but the mountains may see a significant snowfall later Tuesday and Wednesday.

Signs now indicate that we have significant warming after that system, and could be in the 60s by late week and next weekend.
