Armed Robbery Suspect Killed in Crash After Police Chase

A suspect in an armed robbery was killed in a crash while fleeing from police in Randolph, Massachusetts, according to authorities.

Police said no one was injured when a man, identified as 37-year-old Michael Berg of Holbrook, fired a sawed-off shotgun at the floor while he was robbing Super Mart in Randolph around 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Baldev Patel, a Super Mart store clerk, said when the suspect pocketed the money, he accidentally fired off a round and the shots ricochetted off the floor and shattered two panels of glass.

"He had a gun right here. He said, 'give me money, hurry up,'" Patel recalled. "I open the register, I gave some money by mistake and gun - boom."

Berg allegedly escaped with cash, but Patel was able to get his license plate number and called police.

Holbrook police said officers tried to stop Berg in his blue Pontiac G6, but he fled, and officers chased him back to Randolph. At some point, police said Berg dumped the shotgun in Weymouth, but said they were worried he still might hurt someone.

The 3-mile police chase in the middle of the afternoon ended when the Berg's Pontiac slammed head-on into a silver car around 4:30 p.m. on Union Street.

Berg was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the other vehicle was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Police say this is an active and ongoing investigation.

Other jurisdictions are checking to see if the suspect could be connected to other area crimes.
