Rio Olympics Day 2 by the Numbers: Record-Setting Win, High Winds & More

Day 2 of the the 2016 Olympics featured U.S. women's basketball team breaking its own record, canceled rowing events due to persistent high winds and the oldest female gymnast in Olympic history. Here are some notable statistics from Sunday's competitions in Rio:

14: Number of gold medals up for grabs on Sunday.

19: Number of gold medals U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps has won, after a victory by the U.S. men's 4 by 100 meters relay team. Phelps has 23 medals overall. Read more.

121: The number of points U.S. women's basketball team scored against Senegal, breaking its own record of most points scored in the Olympics. The 121-56 win kicked off U.S. team's chase for a sixth straight Olympic gold medal. Read more.

3:56:46: Katie Ledecky's time to the gold in the 400m freestyle, breaking her own World record. Read more.

More than 20 mph: Speed of wind that battered Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, forcing the cancelation of Day 2 of rowing competitions. The rowing regatta is scheduled to end on Aug. 13, but is likely to be extended to Aug. 14 if the weather delays continue. The high winds also delayed tennis matches. 

41: Age of Oksana Chusovitina, oldest Olympic female gymnast in history. Chusovitina is competing in her seventh Olympics, a record for a gymnast. She reached the vault final after finishing fifth in qualifying. Read more. 

118: The ranking of Zambian judo fighter Mathews Punza, who defeated Israel's Golan Pollack, ranked seventh and considered a serious medal contender. But his victory was short-lived. He lost in the next round to Slovenia's Adrian Gomboc. 

66: Ranking of fencer Guilherme Toldo of Brazil, who beat No. 2 Yoki Ota of Japan 15-13 to advance to the round of 16. Toldo's win came a day after the top three fencers in women's epee were knocked out before the semifinals, paving the way for seventh-ranked Emese Szasz of Hungary to snatch gold.

18: Age of youngest boxer at the Rio Olympics. Thadius Katua of Papua New Guinea gave 26-year-old Adlan Abdurashidov of Russan plenty of difficulty, even winning the third round on two judges' scorecards. Katua has been boxing for only four years and crowds cheered wildy for him as he took on a veteran opponent.  

32: The number of years since the U.S. had won an Olympic medal in men's fencing. Foil fencer Alexander Massialas ended the drought Sunday when he took home a silver. Massialas had been favored to win the gold. Read more.
