The start to fall brought us a summer scorcher. Highs soared into the 80s and low 90s. Boston even hit the 90 degree mark by early afternoon. Not a record high though, that record set in 1895 still stands with 96 in Boston.
This heat has to break sometime and that time is tonight as a cold front moves through the northeast. There's a chance for an isolated strong or severe storm across Vermont or western Massachusetts this evening. Damaging wind and small hail will be possible along with the lightning and downpours.
Once the line of storms heads farther south and east tonight, then the storms lose their intensity. A rumble of thunder with the scattered downpours will head through Portland, Hartford, Providence and Boston overnight.
By morning, we should see about 0.25 to 0.5" of rainfall and the last bit of rain moving off Cape Cod for the morning commute.
Highs for Tuesday will be in the mid-70s with a westerly wind. A shortwave will bring a chance for isolated showers in the afternoon, pivoting from northwest to southeast. These showers dissipate by nightfall and high pressure returns for Wednesday with sunshine and highs in the low 70s.
Another cold front moves through on Thursday, bringing scattered rain across New England. We go from upper 70s Thursday to the low 70s Friday. The weekend looks to stay dry with highs in the mid 70s both days.
