Forty-two-year-old Chesna and 77-year-old Vera Adams were killed on Sunday. The man charged in their deaths, 20-year-old Emanuel Lopes, pleaded not guilty to murder charges during his arraignment on Tuesday.

Authorities say Lopes struck the Weymouth sergeant with a rock, grabbed his service weapon and shot him 10 times. They say he went on to shoot Adams through a window on her sun porch. His attorney argued in court that Lopes is not mentally competent to stand trial.

Lopes was ordered held without bail after pleading not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder. He is due back in court for a probable cause hearing on Aug. 15.
