Severe Thunderstorm Moves Over Mass., Bringing Drenching Rain, Lightning and More

The remnants of once Hurricane Barry are moving through this afternoon and this evening

Heat and humidity fueled storms this afternoon. Storms quickly became severe with damage reports starting around 2:30 PM. Some towns were hit by multiple rounds of thunderstorms. Thunderstorms packed winds of 60 MPH (with higher gusts in areas like Holliston) and very heavy rain with widespread 2” amounts.

Residents in Newton went hours without water after the storm slowed repairs on a water main break. Crews shut down parts of Needham Street as they worked to fix the broken water main.

Flooding on the Quincy coast closed Quincy Shore Drive at Bay State Road, according to Massachusetts State Police.

Downpours and storms are part of the forecast for Thursday as well as Wednesday, followed by a major blast of heat in time for the weekend.

Severe thunderstorm warnings were first issued in Massachusetts at 2 p.m. for parts of Worcester, Hampshire, Franklin and Berkshire counties, and later expanded east. Severe thunderstorm watches are in effect through 10 p.m. for the rest of the state.

Intense Thunderstorm Lights Up Boston, Causes Damage Throughout Region

A tornado warning was briefly issued for parts of Berkshire County and a nearby part of New York state.

The storms were fueled by the remnants of once Hurricane Barry as they moved through Wednesday afternoon and evening, bringing pockets of heavy rain and thunderstorms.

The downpours will be around on Thursday too, particularly in southern New England. Temperatures will be held in check, mainly reaching the 70s. In northern New England expect mostly dry and brighter conditions.

Friday the humidity is still in place, and temperatures pop close to 90 again. There may be an isolated storm in far northern New England, but most spots will be dry.

We do it all over again on Saturday, but it’s actually even hotter. Highs will be well into the 90s and even around 100. Boston hasn’t hit 100 since 2011, for perspective. When you combine the heat and humidity, it will feel like 100-110.

Overnight won’t offer much relief, with nighttime temperatures in the 70s to near 80.

It stays warm and soupy on Sunday, with another day around 90 making the stretch a heat wave in some communities. Expect a few thunderstorms on Sunday, especially north and west of Boston.

Next week brings drier weather, and temperatures much closer to normal in the low 80s.
