Expect Icy Conditions After Rain Changes to Snow Overnight

Stormy pattern as February begins

February starts on a mild, and somewhat stormy note.

Morning snow showers today well north and west of Boston will gradually fizzle out around lunchtime, leaving us with a mostly cloudy and fairly mild afternoon. Highs will reach the 30s and 40s, but before that afternoon climb watch for some slick roads in Western and Northern New England.

After the brief break in the action Thursday afternoon, another bundle of energy dives in Thursday night into Friday morning. This will initially bring some rain, before colder air rushing in from the north changes this over to snow.

That transition to snow will happen during the morning commute, especially in areas in southern and eastern New England. At times the snow will fall moderately, resulting in slick travel early.

By afternoon, a powerful northwest wind will blow, and sunshine will return as temperatures drop from the 30s into the 20s.

Between these two disturbances, most New England cities and towns will see a general 1-3 inches, with a few locally higher amounts along the Maine coast and in the Southern Greens in particular. A bit less will fall on Cape Cod and the Islands, but even there a dusting-1 inch is expected.

Chilly air remains in place on Saturday, with highs in the teens and 20s.

Then a storm gathers off the coast Sunday into Monday. Based on the current track this would spread some snow into New England on Sunday, before many in southern New England go over to rain into Monday morning. The mountains of northern New England stand to pick up the most snow as we see it now.

A further shift west would bring even more rain, while a shift east would bring colder air and more snow.

Yet another storm is possible Wednesday into Thursday of next week as our active pattern continues.
