We’ll see some ups and downs in the weather over the coming days, generally ending in a down by late weekend into early next week with cooler temperatures for most of next week, overall.
For now, clouds are thickening Friday and although the skies look threatening, the southern half of New England will stay dry until Friday evening and night, when developing afternoon showers in Northern New England sag south.
These showers will likely reach the Merrimack Valley by 10 p.m. and the Massachusetts Turnpike by midnight, but struggle to drive much farther south than that before turning east and out to sea.
In the wake of this disturbance, a dry Saturday will follow with cool, crisp autumn air and a blend of sun and clouds for the pick of the weekend, far and away. The system that delivered snow to Colorado, Oklahoma and North Texas this week is chugging northeast and will arrive to New England on Sunday.
It will first arrive as showers during the morning, then as a steadier rain in the afternoon and evening, ensuring a wet Patriots game is likely. Given the clouds and rain along with a southeast wind, temperatures are likely to remain raw and chilly Sunday, only in the 40s to lower 50s, until the wind perhaps blows some slightly warmer air into the region at night.

By that point, however, fans and players will already be wet and the kickoff "feels like" temperature will likely have been in the 40s with the rain and breeze.
Monday into Tuesday is all about wind direction: if an onshore wind persists, which seems likely, clouds and pockets of drizzle or showers will be likely, particularly on Monday. Once the wind shifts, our weather will improve at least briefly.
