Saturday marks the first measurable snowfall of the season for many around New England, which means snow removal crews are hitting the road.
MassDOT officials say they have more than 500 pieces of snow-fighting equipment on the ground before noon to treat roads before they ice up, and will have about 2,100 plows ready to clear off 15,000 miles of roads throughout the Commonwealth as the snow starts to accumulate.
Drivers are also being reminded to lower their driving speeds and to not crowd plows on the road.
In Somerville, shoppers were stocking up on salt and shovels at Home Depot on Friday afternoon.
"I ended up getting out of there with paying less than $200," Charlestown resident Jack Castro said. "The shovels are going quick and, obviously, the ice melt."
Snow showers may redevelop again as soon as Monday night, with a rain and snow combo possibly hitting on Tuesday ahead of a cold air front.
