The 29-year-old man who died after he was stabbed in New Haven Monday night was a senior a Southern Connecticut State University student, according to police.

Police said they received a 911 call just after 9:30 p.m. about a stabbing on Whalley Avenue, between Whittlesey Avenue and Osborn Avenue, and officers found 29-year-old Nico Saraceni, who had been stabbed.

He was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he died from his injuries, police said.

Police said Wednesday that Saraceni was a Southern Connecticut State University student.

“We were deeply saddened to learn yesterday about the death of one of our students, Nico Saraceni," SCSU said in a statement.

Saraceni transferred to Southern in fall 2021 and was an interdisciplinary studies major, with concentrations in creative writing and film studies.

Saraceni he had previously attended Keene State University in New Hampshire and was a graduate of Newtown High School, according to SCSU.

Professors Andrew Smyth and Erin Larkin remembered his as “well-known and well-loved” and said he had an “empathic, kind spirit and a true intellectual curiosity.”

SCSU Interdisciplinary Studies Coordinator, Jordan Jones, describes him as “an amazingly thoughtful student with a creative flair and genuine passion for learning” who was excited to learn and grow.

“There are no words to describe the profound sorrow we feel as a community because of Nico’s passing,” a statement from the university said.

Counseling services will be available today at 4:30 p.m. for SCSU students who wish to gather, and additional individual appointments are being offered to students seeking support at this difficult time.

Departments will be hosting intimate private gatherings to remember Saraceni.

Law enforcement officials said the stabbing does not appear to have been a random act of violence.

"At this point in the investigation, it appears as if this was not a random act of violence.  I do not believe there is a threat to the public at this time,” New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson said in a statement.

Detectives from the major crimes unit are investigating.
