National Grid Worker Struck, Thrown by Vehicle in Spencer: Police

The worker had been marking the road when he was struck by an SUV on Route 9

A National Grid worker was hospitalized Wednesday morning after being struck by a vehicle in Spencer, Massachusetts, according to police.

The crash happened at about 10:30 a.m. on Route 9, where authorities said the worker had been marking the roadway for a future project.

"It's just a terrible, terrible accident," witness Denise Cole said.

The 50-year-old worker from Dudley had been in the eastbound lane of the roadway when police said he was struck by a white sport utility vehicle which was also traveling eastbound.

"My daughter heard someone screaming from her window above so she looked out and she came down and she said, 'there's someone laying in the road mom,'" Cole recalled.

Police said the worker, who has not been identified, was thrown roughly 40-feet as a result of the impact of the crash.

Witnesses said the victim was initially unconscious, but a good Samaritan stopped and tried to help.

"The individual that stopped to administer the CPR should be absolutely commended," said a woman who lives near the scene. "He's absolutely heroic for stopping and performing CPR."

Both the victim and the 60-year-old North Brookfield woman driving the car were transported to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester for treatment. Their exact conditions are unclear.

"She stopped, yes, and she was extremely upset and distraught," Cole recalled.

People who live nearby said cars go way too fast in the area and the hills reduce visibility.

"People fly up and down. They go – I think it's posted like 35 – because it's thickly settled over there, people probably go 60 up there like you just hear them flying," resident Brandy Curboy said.

No charges have been filed against the driver who hit the National Grid worker but the crash remains under investigation.

National Grid released a statement saying, "We have limited information about the incident on Route 9 and are communicating with local authorities as they investigate the circumstances that led to our employee being injured. Our focus and thoughts are on our employee and his family as he receives medical attention."
