4 Students Hospitalized After Mace Incident in Brockton, Massachusetts

Several students were hospitalized after an accidental mace discharge in a Brockton school

Four students in Brockton were hospitalized in the middle of the school day Friday after an incident with a staff member's mace, law enforcement sources say.

The incident occurred sometime before 11 a.m. at the New Heights Charter School, located on Main Street in Brockton, Massachusetts.

According to Brockton law enforcement, a staff member's  keychain mace accidentally discharged while it was in their possession. students were treated for watery eyes and other symptoms typical of contact with tear gas.

According to the Brockton Fire Department, students on the building's second floor were moved to the exterior or the building. First-floor students were held in place.

The first-floor students were later evacuated. Firefighters ventilated the building to disperse any remnants of the product.

Multiple EMS units were on the scene along with a school nurse to evaluate students with respiratory complaints.

The condition of the 4 children who were hospitalized is not clear at this time.

The exact circumstances leading up to the incident are also unclear.
