Police: Swimmer Drowns at Webster Lake

Authorities have recovered the male body from the water

A swimmer drowned at Webster Lake in Webster, Massachusetts Saturday evening, according to police.

Officials say the swimmer went under around 7:30 p.m. and never came back up. Authorities have recovered the male body from the water.

Webster Fire Department confirmed a dive team responded to the lakeside boat ramp for a water rescue around 7:40 p.m.

Several civilians, including an off-duty Webster police officer, as well as responding officers, went into the water to try to find where the distressed swimmer was but they were unable to locate him, according to Webster Deputy Police Chief Michael Shaw.

Webster firefighters, along with members from the dive team, located the swimmer, who was then transferred to Hubbard Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The victim has not been identified.

It's not immediately clear why the swimmer became distressed.

The local district attorney has taken over the investigation, but police say at this point the drowning appears to be an accident, not suspicious.

No other information was immediately available.
