A teenage girl who suffered serious head trauma after being hit by a car Saturday afternoon on Stockwell Drive in Avon, Massachusetts has died from her injuries.
Police say 19-year-old Ariel Dineen, of Brockton, was working at Party City and was walking across the street to meet an acquaintance at Dunkin Donuts, attempting to cross three lanes of traffic, not in a crosswalk.
Investigators say it was just before 2 p.m. at the border of Avon and Stoughton, and the teen had made it past two lanes when she tripped, fell to the ground and was struck by the oncoming vehicle.
The driver who hit Dineen did stop. Police were running some tests on his Jeep. Backing it up, speeding forward and hitting the brakes to see if anything was wrong. The man who hit the teenager had his hands in his face sobbing after talking to police at the scene.
The 19-year-old's clothes were left in a pile near the black Jeep that killed her.
The road was closed down for four hours as police pieced together the facts, clogging up the busy street off Route 24.
Avon and State Police are working with the Norfolk County District Attorney's Office. They will determine whether or not charges will be filed, but Avon Police Chief David Martineau says it appears it was just a terrible, unfortunate accident.
