People in Massachusetts can now text 911 to request emergency services, public safety officials announced Wednesday.
The 911 system in the state now allows all 911 call centers to receive text messages, though officials still encourage making a phone call if possible.
Frank Pozniak, executive director of the state 911 department, said that those who cannot make a phone call, such as people being held against their will or victims of domestic violence, will now have greater access to emergency services.
"This is a significant improvement to our 911 system that will save lives,” said Public Safety and Security Secretary Tom Turco.
Those wishing to contact 911 by text simply need to enter "911" in the "to" field when writing the text, and write a text message as normal. Public safety officials stress that your location should be included in the test.
