Boston Fire District Chief Accused of Drunk Driving

A Boston Fire district chief is facing a judge Tuesday after allegedly hitting several vehicles and trying to flee the scene while driving drunk.

Mark Buchanan, 60, of Plymouth was arrested Saturday by Wareham police on multiple charges, including operating under the influence of alcohol and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

Wareham police say officers responded to the Onset Fire Department's parking lot for a report of a possibly intoxicated driver that had hit a vehicle and was trying to drive away.

A Wareham officer who is also an Onset firefighter watched Buchanan back into a parked car owned by another Onset firefighter and then try to get out of the parking lot, according to police. The officer allegedly tried to get Buchanan to stop, but Buchanan didn't, forcing the officer to get out of the way.

Buchanan then allegedly stopped and told the officer that he was a Boston Fire district chief.

In a statement, Boston Fire Commissioner Joseph Finn said the department is "aware" of the charges Buchanan faces.

"We will monitor the situation as it is adjudicated through the court system and take appropriate action if and when it is necessary," Finn said.

Buchanan is due in Wareham District Court on Tuesday. It's unclear if he has an attorney.
