Ice Jams, Flooding and Flash Freeze: Winter Makes Swift Return

Over the last 24 hours, some spots in Rhode Island have received over three inches of rainfall, while parts of northern Vermont received at least four inches of snowfall.

With this complex system, it was a clash of an unseasonably warm airmass with a cold, Canadian airmass. Where these two clashed is where the cold front lined up.

It was easily visible Saturday morning on our New England temperature maps with Burlington, Vermont in the teens, and Manchester, New Hampshire and Boston, Massachusetts near 60, with rain south, and a wintry mix to snow the farther north you went.

For our Saturday afternoon and evening, temperatures in far southeastern New England ahead of the cold front were near 60. By Saturday evening, we’ll be in the lower 20s to upper teens.

So, for any of your weekend travel plans, be sure to take it slow since a flash freeze is likely on many roadways and sidewalks as temperatures plummet below freezing very quickly. Any standing water, like ponding water from the storm, could make for icy and slick road conditions.

As temperatures continue to dive, be sure to wear the layers if you’re one of the lucky fans going to the Titans vs. Patriots game in Foxboro. Temperatures likely will be in the 20s by kickoff with a NNW wind at 10-20 mph, making wind chills into the lower teens for most of the game.

Overnight, as skies continue to clear out, lows will slip into the single digits to subzero in northern New England, and into the teens in southern New England.

Sunday morning features some ocean-effect snow showers that develop in the pre-dawn hours along the Cape. Otherwise, it's a bright and sun-filled day for the rest of New England with highs into the lower 20s.

The colder air lingers through most of the next work week with the potential for some accumulating snowfall as a clipper from the Midwest will slide in by Tuesday through Wednesday with snow spreading from west to east. How much snow still remains the question. We’ll keep an eye on that as we get closer.

Otherwise, the temperature trend is on the rise by the end of the 10-day forecast with high temperatures by next weekend into the mid to upper 40s.
