A man was allegedly operating under the influence of alcohol when the coupe convertible he was driving was involved in a rollover crash in Winthrop, killing both of his passengers, officials say.

The flipped Mitsubishi Eclipse was resting on its roof at Winthrop Shore Drive near Neptune Avenue after the crash was reported to Massachusetts State Police around 3 p.m. Sunday.

A preliminary investigation reveals the vehicle, with three people inside, struck a parked 2013 Dodge Ram pickup truck, which was unoccupied, police said.

"I was sitting in the car, facing the opposite way of the car, and I heard um a scream, and then I heard a bang, and then I heard my girlfriend scream, 'oh my god,' and then I heard someone scream, 'call 911,' so I just grabbed my phone and called 911," said Mike Ventre who witnessed the crash. "And these guys, professionals, they were here within five minutes, and uh you know, it's kind of one of those things that you don't want to see on a Sunday, or any day for that matter."

One passenger, a 29-year-old Beverly woman, was pronounced dead on scene. The second passenger, a 28-year-old woman from Winthrop, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital where she was later pronounced dead, according to police.

The driver, a 30-year-old man from Winthrop, was also taken to Mass. General with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

Charges will be filed against the driver to include operating under the influence of liquor as well as other charges related to the deaths of his two passengers, police said. It's unclear if he has an attorney.

Winthrop Shore Drive at Neptune Avenue was closed in all directions for approximately four hours during the crash investigation and reconstruction. All lanes were opened just before 7 p.m.

The crash remains under investigation.
