Woman Held Without Bail in Crash That Killed Married Couple

A woman charged with killing a married couple in a car crash in Easton, Massachusetts and trying to flee the scene on foot afterward was ordered held without bail at her arraignment on Friday.

Sheri Vazquez, 33, of Easton, is charged with leaving the scene — death resulting, two counts of motor vehicle homicide by reckless operation, reckless operation of a motor vehicle and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in connection with the crash on Thursday night. Additional charges may be forthcoming. She is scheduled to return to court on for a dangerousness hearing on Wednesday.

Police said Vazquez was traveling at a high rate of speed at about 6:15 p.m. on Route 138 when she crashed into another vehicle that was trying to turn onto Purchase Street.

The married couple in the other vehicle, who were identified as 79-year-old John Masefield and 77-year-old Virginia Masefield, of West Bridgewater, died from their injuries. 

The manager at the Chateau restaurant in Norton said John Masefield started working in the kitchen several months ago, adding that the couple left behind six daughters.

Vazquez was the sole occupant of the Dodge Journey she was traveling in. Officials said she ran away from the scene on foot and was arrested a short time later.

She was taken to an area hospital Thursday where she remained through Friday morning. It is unclear if her arraignment will follow as schedule since she was hospitalized.
