A woman has died from injuries sustained during a fall into a fire pit outside her Worcester, Massachusetts, home.

Fire officials confirm they were called to a home on Heard Street around 8:30 p.m. Saturday, where they found a woman who had fallen into a fire pit in the backyard of the home.

The woman, who Masslive.com reports is 71-year-old Jacqueline Cardinal, was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering from significant burn wounds.

Worcester fire officials tell NBC10 Boston they believe she was alone at home when she fell in.

The family declined to talk to NBC10 Boston, but neighbors said the woman was a caring and thoughtful person.

"I'd like to give the family my thoughts and prayers. I lost my son in a car crash 15 years ago and they were one of the first ones to come down and see me," Francis Baldino said. "I'm hoping that they can handle this and get through it. I know this is a terrible thing."

Cardinal reportedly was the mother of two and also raised four foster children with her late husband.

Fire officials say the state's medical examiner will determine the exact cause of Cardinal's death.

The investigation into her death is onling.
