Wynn Boston Harbor Casino Taking Shape

You can't miss it when you enter Everett, Massachusetts: a massive hotel tower rising from what was once an industrial parcel of land along the Mystic River.

Wynn Boston Harbor is taking shape. The $2.4 billion casino project is on track to be finished by June 2019. It is the largest single-phase private development in the history of Massachusetts.

"We have made incredible progress," said Bob DeSalvio, the president of Wynn Boston Harbor.

The centerpiece of the project is the 200,000 square foot gaming floor, which is actually two floors.

NBC Boston got an inside look at the project.

"When you think about what has been accomplished by the men and women of the trades since last August, it's literally been amazing," said DeSalvio.

There are a total of 4,000 construction workers and most of them are from Massachusetts.

"When you think about what has been accomplished by the men and women of the trades since last August, it's literally been amazing," said DeSalvio.

When finished, it will not only feature the massive gaming area, but also 13 restaurants, a spa, convention space and even a 28 million Popeye statue that was purchased by Steve Wynn.

There are more than 670 hotel rooms and crews are on track to build a floor per week to get to 27 stories.

As for the waterfront below, DeSalvio said they are making major progress there, as well.

Wynn is spending $30 million on cleanup that includes dredging the Mystic River. They've already begun planting greenery on the shoreline, as well.

"So that we could get some marine life and aquatic life and clean up the shoreline," DeSalvio explained.

This project is also taking changing climate into account. The resort is being built 25 feet above sea level, and that meets the 500-year floodplain.

"It also provides an opportunity for us to prevent future sea level rise and potential hurricanes in the future," DeSalvio said.

This casino wasn't always a sure bet. There were controversies, delays and concerns about traffic.

Wynn says they are investing $60 million to improve Broadway and Sullivan Square.

"We really feel good that this project really represents an opportunity for a business to change a neighborhood," said DeSalvio.

He adds the project is on track to open June 24, 2019.

"Right now, so far so good," said DeSalvio. "Everything is on track for that opening date."
