Firefighters Battle Cape Cod Marijuana Dispensary Blaze

Crews responded to a marijuana dispensary in Mashpee early Friday morning for reports of a fire in the building with heavy smoke.

The fire at Medical Marijuana of Massachusetts, located at 28 Echo Road, was reported just after 6:30 a.m. by a passerby, said the Mashpee Fire Department.

No one was in the building at the time of the fire.

According to Mashpee Fire Captain Joseph Peltier, crews arrived on the scene to find smoke coming from the rear of the dispensary. Crews determined that the fire had started in the attic. Upon further investigation, officials concluded that the fire broke out when recently installed heated cables ignited nearby cellulose insulation.

Mashpee Fire was assisted in the fight by fire departments from Sandwich, Cotuit and Centerville.

No injures were reported as a result of the fire.

The dispensary was newly built and there was no marijuana in the building when the fire broke out, said Captain Peltier. The location was set to open later this month.

Property damages are estimated at $25,000. The dispensary was scheduled for its final Department of Public Health inspection before opening to the public today, said officials.
