One man has been arrested on distribution of drug charges as police investigate an early morning shooting in Harvard Square.

According to Cambridge police, a 27-year-old Roxbury man named Thomas Davis has been arrested and charged with distribution of a class D drug as part of their investigation into a shooting in Harvard Square.

"I did hear the bangs, and that's what woke me up," student Mahnaz Khazan said. "I looked up, I couldn't see anything at the time. I just saw traffic because there are so many students around. I didn't think much of it."

Khazan says the shooting surprised her since she believes it's a safe neighborhood.

"This is Cambridge. You don't expect anything like this," she said.

Samantha Saucier, a Cambridge resident, echoed Khazan's shock.

"Surprising, for sure. This is a very safe area," Saucier said.

Harvard's Kennedy School of Government sits on the same street where this shooting happened. It's a street full of restaurants, bars and people.

Police say they received a call about gunshots in the area of Eliot Street near JFK Street at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday morning. Upon arrival, officers found multiple shell casings on Eliot Street.

A nearby hospital reported that an 18-year-old Cambridge resident arrived on-site with non-life threatening injuries sustained from a gunshot. Officers then went to the hospital to speak with the victim.

According to police, two groups were reportedly involved in several altercations in the Harvard Square area before the shooting.

No one has been charged in the shooting.

The victim, who police say is not a student, has since been released from the hospital.

Although the search isn't over, residents in the neighborhood aren't too worried.

"I have my rings on. I have my earrings on. I feel very safe. I think Cambridge is a great place," Khazan said.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the incident.

[NATL] Student Suspended for Posting Warnings of Rapist in School Bathrooms

A sophomore at Maine's Cape Elizabeth High School was suspended for bullying after she left sticky notes in two girls bathrooms reading, "There’s a rapist in our school and you know who it is.” "It makes me angry that I'm being punished for bullying and a rapist isn't being punished for raping people," Aela Mansmann said.
