Authorities say a 63-year-old man is dead following a house fire in Maine.

Fire officials in New Gloucester say that neighbors called in the fire at 81 Bluffs Circle around 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

Firefighters found the body of Raymond Howland on the front stairways of the split-level ranch home; investigators say family members told them Howland spent most of his time in the living room, where the fire started. He died from smoke inhalation, according to officials.

The battery-operated smoke detector in the house wasn't working, and investigators add that it was operating, Howland would have likely survived the fire.

Captain Scott Doyle of the New Gloucester Fire Department told affiliate WCSH6 this is the first fatal fire since he's started working at the department 20 years ago.

Maine investigators say the cause of the fire can't be determined.
