72-Year-Old Man Killed in Head-on Crash in Woburn, Massachusetts

A 72-year-old man was killed in a head-on crash in Woburn, Massachusetts, on Wednesday.

The crash was reported around 11 a.m. at Cambridge and Locust streets. At least two cars were involved, and police confirmed that a man in one of those vehicles died.

Police said the victim, identified as Edward Garner of New Hampshire, was driving his car on Cambridge Street when he swerved into oncoming traffic in the other lane. The driver of the other vehicle was taken to Lahey Hospital. Their condition was not immediately known.

Aerial video of the scene from NBC10 Boston's Sky Ranger helicopter showed two heavily damaged cars that appear to have collided head on. A second scene nearby showed a FedEx truck that had taken down three utility poles and some wires.

Police said the second crash occurred when the FedEx truck driver tried to turn around to avoid the original accident scene. The accident knocked out power to the area, and homeowners were told it could be several hours before their electricity is restored.

"It looks like he pulled the wires and then a domino effect," said neighbor Richard Fucarile. "When I was in the house, the lights started flashing, and you heard a pop and you heard a sizzle."

"He was basically behind the accident," Woburn Police Chief Robert Rufo said of the FedEx driver. "When he saw it, he thought he would be able to turn around on Surrey Circle."

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
