Firefighters Rescue Man, Cat From Blaze

A Hartford resident was hospitalized with critical injuries after firefighters found him unconscious on a stairwell during a two-alarm fire Tuesday night in an apartment complex.

A fire broke out on the second floor of a 30-unit condo building at 47 Willard Street. Firefighters arrived at about 6 p.m. and evacuated the residents.

Crews found and rescued the tenant of the apartment where the fire broke out and his cat. The man was unconscious and when crews pulled him out of the building, he was still breathing.

The injured party was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Hartford and has since been transferred to the burn unit of Bridgeport Hospital. He is listed in critical condition.

The fire was contained to his second-floor apartment, which was destroyed and is uninhabitable.

He and four other families were displaced and are staying with relatives. Otherwide, people have been allowed back in the building.

The fire remains under investigation and the cause is unknown at this time.
