1 Dead, 12 Homeless After Fire Rips Through Home

House fire was reported early Sunday morning in Springfield, Massachusetts

A woman is dead and 12 others are homeless after a fire broke out Sunday morning at 25-27 Converse St. in Springfield, Massachusetts.

The Springfield Fire Department responded to the blaze around 4 a.m. Upon arrival, they rescued a woman attempting to escape the fire by going through a window and onto the porch roof. Officials say the woman told firefighters her mother was still inside the home.

Rescuers found the mother unconscious on the kitchen floor. She was taken to Bay State Medical Center where she died.

Damage is estimated at $55,000.

The American Red Cross assisted those displaced, providing emergency shelter, funds for food and comfort kits.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
