10 Arrested in Springfield, Massachusetts, Drug Sweep

The investigation targeted a high-crime area

Ten people were arrested on Tuesday as part of an investigation into the distribution of heroin, cocaine and marijuana in Springfield, Massachusetts.

The Springfield Police Department's Narcotics Division concentrated its efforts into the high-crime area of Orchard and Washburn streets. At 1 p.m., simultaneous search warrants were issued at two locations.

Arrested at 88 Washburn St. were Alberto Fonseca, 30, and Jericer Rosario, 23, on cocaine and marijuana possession charges. Seized from the residence were seven bags of cocaine, one bag of marijuana, $1,270 in cash and various implements used to package and distribute cocaine and marijuana.

Arrested in the rear of 65 Orchard St. were Juan Alberto Oquendo, 34, of 879 Worthington St.; Raul A. Rodriguez, 35, of 438 Plainfield St.; Jomar Munoz, 24, of unknown address, Chicopee; Edwin Velez, 29, of 769 Worthington St.; Francisco Gutierrez, 22, of 61 Massasoit St.; and Carlos Trinidad-Burgos, 33, of 18 Talcott Ave. All six were charged with possession of cocaine and heroin with intent to sell.

Arrested near the intersection of Orchard Street and Riverside Avenue after fleeing the area of 65 Orchard St. on foot were Angel Ramirez, 44, of 129R Birch Park Circle, and Luis Alfredo Ruiz, 42, of 34 Calhoun St. They were both charged with possession of cocaine and heroin with intent to sell.

Also issued a summons to court as a result of the search warrant at 65 Orchard St. was Denise Berrios, 31, for possession of cocaine and heroin with intent to sell. 

Seized from 65 Orchard St. were 190 bags of heroin, 9 bags of cocaine, $740 in cash and various implements used to package and distribute cocaine and heroin.
