Volunteers have pulled 135 tires from a Vermont marsh as part of an annual Connecticut River cleanup in Brattleboro.
The Brattleboro Reformer reports the tires came from a waterway in Brattleboro and most were dated before 2000.
Kathy Urffer, Connecticut River Conservancy (CRC) River Steward for Vermont and New Hampshire, says tires aren't biodegradable and they affect the local wildlife.
She says the car tires will be donated to Bridgestone's Tire4Ward program, which uses them for railroad materials and tire-based fuel.
More than 3,000 volunteers participated in the cleanup along the Connecticut River and its tributaries Sept. 28 and 29.
CRC Executive Director Andrew Fisk says volunteers have cleaned up more than 1,000 tons of trash over the past 22 years.
This year's trash totals are still being tallied.
